Deciduous trees are trees that lose their leaves in winter or the dry season. The word deciduous is from the Latin word “decidere”, which means “to fall off”. These trees are found in temperate and tropical climates all over the world. Most deciduous trees are broad-leaved, with wide flat leaves. The broad leaves of the deciduous trees are susceptible to being damaged during cold or dry weather. The trees often have a rounded shape, with branches that spread out as they grow.

Melia Dubia is deciduous trees that can be grown on any kind of soil, provided with good irrigation facilities. These trees are can be grown in any part of India except for extremely cold places. During winters, these trees are known to shed all their leaves and these leaves grow back after the arrival of spring.

Before discussing the reasons behind Melia Dubia trees losing their leaves in winters, let’s talk about how trees normally get energy. Just like we need food to get energy, trees also make their own food to get energy. Trees use sunlight from the sun and water from the ground to make their food through the process popularly known as photosynthesis.

But the question still lies- why do trees shed their leaves during winters?

When the winter season sets in, the days become shorter and the sunlight is hardly available. So, when sunlight is not available, the trees cannot make food. Therefore, rather than continuing to make food with little sunlight, they go in a rest position by shedding their leaves. This way, they use very little energy and have just enough water and nutrition stored in their trunk to stay alive till spring arrives. When spring arrives, the temperature goes up and there is more sunlight for new leaves to grow and cover the trees once more.

Shedding leaves helps trees to conserve water and energy. As unfavorable weather approaches, the trees trigger the process of abscission, which is the process of shedding off different parts of a tree that are unneeded. At the start of the abscission process, trees reabsorb valuable nutrients from their leaves and store them for later use in the roots. Chlorophyll, the pigment that gives leaves their green color, is one of the first molecules to be broken down for its nutrients. This is one of the reasons for trees turning red, orange or gold during the fall. At the end of the abscission process, when the leaves have been shed, a protective layer of cells grows over the exposed area.

But there are a few trees who do not shed their leaves in any weather condition. These trees are called “evergreen” trees and they retain their leaves throughout the year. These trees are used to the cold weather and have very deep roots that can reach water and nutrition even in snowy conditions. Also, few deciduous trees like pines and spruces, which have pointed leaves, do not shed their leaves in dry or harsh climate since they have high resin content which keeps them alive during winter.

Melia Dubia trees are deciduous trees and shed their leaves in the winter season. These trees have a healthy growth during summer and spring season, but during winter, the trees lose their leaves and its growth also slows down. Melia Dubia trees though can be grown all-over India and in any kind of soil, but they cannot be grown in places with extremely harsh weather because of its deciduous nature. The trees need soil with enough moisture to have a healthy and steady growth which is impossible in cold regions like Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
