“Seasoning” is the process of removing moisture from the timber to the required level. This process is generally done to minimize or nullify any structural deformity that may arise in the wood. Wood with any kind of structural problem may cause hindrance in construction when used as a building material. It is also a fact that wood with proper structural development gives out less smoke upon combustion, they prove to be ideal for firewood. When the moisture content of wood is reduced, its durability, strength, and elasticity improve.

There are two main methods of seasoning: Natural (Air) and Artificial (Kiln) drying.

  1. In Natural drying which is the traditional form of seasoning wood or timber, wood is kept in the open air so that all the moisture present in the freshly felled tree evaporates, and thus the wood gets seasoned. This method is economical but is altogether a slow process.
  1. Artificial (Kiln) drying is a method where timber is dried using a man-made device such as a kiln. The name of this process has been derived from the device used in it. This is again a very economical method, where the drying time of the wood is greatly reduced, and the properties and strength of the wood remain intact.

In both these cases, timber needs to be separated and stacked to allow the full circulation of air around the stack.

  1. Chances of wood decay reduce.
  2. The weight of the timber is reduced.
  3. Its load-bearing capacity increases as its durability, elasticity, and strength increases.
  4. Properties like: glue adhesive property, thermal and electrical insulation, and easy preservative property increase.

“Preservation” is the process in which various types of preservatives like coal tar, oil paints, chemical slats, solignum paints, etc. are used to increase the life of the timber. This process increases the durability of timber even more and ensures its safety from insects and fungi. If the process of preservation is skipped, the wood or timber will be diseased and will get badly damaged.

It is important to know that Melia Dubia trees season well if the logs are still in a green state. Upon drying, like any other timber, it forces across the grain. This property makes Melia Dubia softwood. It can be easily cut down using a saw. The main drawback of long term seasoning of Melia Dubia wood is that, if left drying for long, Melia Dubia wood develops end splitting.

  1. The best method of seasoning Melia Dubia trees is to convert the trees to logs soon after the trees are felled.
  2.  Then these logs need to be stacked in the open air so that the moisture content of the logs evaporates.
  3. Keeping these Melia Dubia trees stacked in a shady place is important to avoid grey stains.
